A painting project is most rewarding when you can immediately feel the benefits of the finished product. The awesome thing about paint is that it can be used to achieve innumerable different purposes. Even a slight change of a room color can effect a completely different atmosphere in a room. Different colors and mixtures of paints can make a room feel brighter, darker, smaller, larger, cooler, warmer, et cetera.
Summer, especially, is the perfect time to change room color scheme to create a cool and airy atmosphere. Here are a few ways to achieve this kind of atmosphere:
- Paint in light or pastel colors. Dark tones absorb light, whereas light colors reflect light and create an illusion of a bigger space.
- Use a monochromatic color scheme. The fewer colors in a room, the less cluttered it will appear. When the entire color palate of the room is only a few colors, it will seem larger and cooler.
- Paint trim and moldings lighter than the walls. When trim is painted in a light color, it works to create a reverse shadow effect, making the walls appear to extend farther back, and the room appear larger.
- Let in as much light as possible. Use sheer curtains or window coverings on the windows to let as much natural light in as possible. The more light enters the room, the more the walls will reflect the light, illuminating every corner of the room.
- Use mirrors for decoration. Using a decorative wall mirror can create depth in a room and can help brighten the room by reflecting light.
- Keep decorations simple. Having more than one or two focal points in a room can create confusion and make the room feel small and cluttered. Also, you can create intrigue and extra space in a room when you arrange furniture diagonally. The furthest distance of a square or rectangle (the shape of most rooms) is a diagonal line. So by arranging furniture at an angle, you force the eye to move along the longest point of the room.
