If termites have invaded your home, you probably have a lot of questions. Where did these pests come from? Am I stuck with them forever? How can I undo termite damage?
There’s no need to be paranoid about termites, but if you know what to look for, you can spot termite damage before it gets too serious. Some signs that you may have some unwelcome termite visitors include:
Time of Year
It’s possible to get termites year-round, but signs that they’ve invaded your home may be more obvious in the spring. You may notice small flying insects around your windows and doors, and if those insects have been discarding their wings, you may be dealing with termites.
Early Damage Signs
Unfortunately, termites are mostly very sneaky and hard to spot - even if you haven’t noticed them at your windows, you could still have an infestation. Termite damage may show itself in several ways:
- Floor damage: If you’ve noticed your floor blistering or sagging, or if your floor feels more spongy or springy than usual, the culprit may be termites. Having laminate flooring doesn’t guarantee your immunity either; termites can strike anywhere.
- Wall damage: Unless you’ve been playing tackle football indoors, unexplained cracks in the wall could be the fault of termites.
- Ceiling damage: Look for the same kind of damage such as unexplained cracks or bulges on your ceiling as you would on your floor or wall. It could be caused by ( you guessed it) termites.
- Uncooperative doors: If your doors and windows are suddenly difficult to close or open, after you’ve made sure that you didn’t accidentally lock yourself out of the house, the problem could be caused by termites (termites burrow through wood and can cause doors structures to change so that they no longer fit snugly within the door frame the way they used to).
You may find signs of termite damage outdoors, too: if you have wood in your garden (fence posts or stakes) you may find holes or warps in it; termites can also spread to your trees, causing branches to fall.
If you suspect that you have termites, you’ll want to contact an exterminator to deal with the problem immediately. But after dealing with the problem at the source, you may be left figuring out how to repair the damage the termites left.
