Stucco may be an attractive, durable material, but it isn’t indestructible. Like any exterior surface, it occasionally requires attention because of the natural toll that age, wear, damage, seismic shifts, settling, and moisture can take.
The key is to proactively watch for cracks and damage ; catching the issue early is your ticket to a smaller repair. Here’s a good rule of thumb: if the crack is wide enough to slip a credit card inside, it’s time to repair your stucco.
Repairing Damaged Stucco During a Home Painting Project
Our client in Modesto asked us to paint their home’s exterior , but first we needed to address the cracked and damaged stucco. As you can see in the photos, it was obvious that a repair was necessary.
How did we do it? We’re glad you asked!
- Because of the width of the damage, we first used foam backer rod to create a sturdy foundation for a long-lasting result
- We then installed stucco mesh (a firm, galvanized metal lath made for this purpose)
- With the foundation securely laid, we patched, primed, and painted

Because our goal is to avoid a “quick fix” and leave a surface that will last, we used quality products and took the time to do the job properly. And, on an equally important note, it looks fantastic!
How Can You Protect Your Stucco Siding?
We can’t surround our homes with bubble wrap, but there are specific steps you can take to protect your stucco siding. Here a few tips to keep in mind:
- Be vigilant. Walk around your property and look for areas that are beginning to show signs of weakness or decay. As we mentioned above, catching a problem early is the greatest way to avoid a larger issue.
- It’s also important to keep an eye on your sprinkler. If the stream of water perpetually makes contact with your stucco, this will become an issue.
- Do you have bushes or other plants brushing up against your siding? Believe it or not, this opportunity for moisture transmission will create a problem over time.
