One of the reasons why painting kitchen cabinets is so popular is its nearly unlimited potential for customization. If you visit a site like Houzz.com , you’ll find cabinets (in bathrooms too!) that range from glossy black to off-white to fire engine red, and nearly everything sprinkled in the middle.
In other words, there’s something for everyone.
One extremely popular method of cabinet customization that has really never lost any steam is “antiquing.” It’s also sometimes called “distressing.” This style brings a little age to your kitchen in a good way, with purposefully worn corners that make the space feel warmer and settled, not sterile and brand new.
We recently finished painting and antiquing kitchen cabinets for one of our clients, and we thought we’d give you a behind-the-scenes look at the process.
Our Process for Antiquing Kitchen Cabinets - Adding the “Distressed” Look
- We begin by carefully covering the counters and floor
- The cabinet doors and drawers are then taken back to our shop
- We thoroughly clean, degrease, and lightly sand the surfaces
- We apply and backroll the primer to minimize the grain in the wood
- After another light sanding, we spray two coats of paint
- Finally, we apply stain to the cabinets’ edges by hand, creating the exact look our client had in mind
These steps come together to create a warm, inviting kitchen that is just full of character.
