June 28, 2023

Looking to give your kitchen a fresh, updated look without breaking the bank? Repainting your cabinets can be the perfect solution. In this blog post, we'll take you through an inspiring cabinet painting project in Atwater, CA, where we transformed old and worn oak cabinets into a stunning focal point using a contrasting color scheme. Discover how a pop of color on the island and the expertise of our lead painter, Ashoor and crew, brought new life to this kitchen.

Painting Cabinets with Contrasting Colors for Visual Interest:

One of the current trends in kitchen design is the use of a contrasting color island. This technique adds visual interest and creates a captivating focal point. For this project, our client opted for a classic yet modern approach, choosing Snowbound for the cabinets and Iron Ore for the island. The combination of these colors brightened up the room, while bringing depth and sophistication to the space-instantly transforming it into a stylish and inviting kitchen.

Saving Time and Money with Repainting:

Repainting cabinets offers significant advantages over the costly and time-consuming process of cabinet replacement. By choosing to repaint their cabinets, our client not only saved money but also avoided the need for a lengthy kitchen remodel. With our expertise in cabinet painting and refinishing, we were able to refresh the worn-out oak cabinets, giving them a brand-new appearance and extending their lifespan.

 Expert Leadership and Impeccable Results:

Ashoor, our talented lead painter, led the team in this cabinet painting project. With years of experience and a keen eye for detail, Ashoor and team ensured that every surface was meticulously prepared, cleaned, and primed before applying the new paint. The result was a smooth, factory-like finish that exceeded our client's expectations.

FAQ:

Q: What does the process look like?

A: First, we remove all of the doors, drawers, and hardware as well as label everything. Next, we clean all of the surfaces to remove any dirt and grease that may have built up over time. Then, we sand everything to degloss the wood. This ensures that the primer can properly adhere to all surfaces. After priming, we sand again to make sure that everything is smooth and prepped for paint. We then go through and caulk joints, trim pieces, etc. for a flawless finish. Finally, we apply two coats of high quality finish paint. Once everything is dry, we put everything back together, clean up, and put fresh bumpers on the backs of all doors and drawer faces for a softer close and to prolong the life of your paint and hardware.

Q: How do I care for painted cabinets?

A: Typically, you can wipe down your cabinets with a damp cloth. If further cleaning is needed, use a mild detergent and warm water.

Q: How long does it take for the paint to fully dry?

A: The paint dries on the surface very quickly. Once your doors and drawers are reinstalled they are dry to the touch and ready to be used! However, it takes up to a month for the paint to fully “cure”, or harden.

Q: Is the project done onsite?

A: We spray cabinet doors and drawers in our mobile spray booth, or bring them to the spray booth at our shop in Denair to minimize the mess in the home as much as possible.

Q: Can you install hardware in the doors and drawers?

A: Yes, we can install your new hardware for an additional charge.

Q: Will the wood grain still show?

A: While the wood grain will be less pronounced after painting, it will still be visible.

If your kitchen feels outdated, dark, or worn, you’re not alone. For many homeowners, the kitchen is the first space they want to update — but it’s also where renovation costs can spiral fast.

Your garage has quietly become one of the most used spaces in your home. It holds tools, storage, seasonal items, and everything in between. Yet for most homeowners, it is also the most overlooked when it comes to quality and design. That usually leads to one decision point: Do you go with a quick, off-the-shelf solution, or invest in something built to last? The difference is bigger than most people expect. The Problem with Most Garage Cabinets At first glance, store-bought or modular garage cabinets seem like the easy choice. They are accessible, lower cost upfront, and promise a quick upgrade. But over time, the limitations start to show. Many of these systems are made with thinner materials and basic construction methods that simply are not designed for real, long-term use. Shelves begin to sag under weight. Doors shift out of alignment. Finishes chip, stain, or absorb moisture. What started as a clean, organized space slowly turns into another maintenance problem. What Makes Custom Garage Cabinets Different Custom garage cabinets are not built for short-term convenience. They are engineered for performance. Every detail, from how the cabinet is constructed to how it is finished, is designed to handle daily use without breaking down. Here is where that difference shows up most. Real Strength Comes from How It Is Built One of the biggest differences is in the construction. Custom cabinets built with dado joints distribute weight across the entire panel instead of relying on fasteners alone. That means significantly more strength and stability over time. The result is simple. No sagging shelves. No warping. No structural failure. Just consistent performance, year after year. A Finish That Actually Holds Up Most garage cabinets are finished on the exterior only, leaving interior surfaces exposed to wear, moisture, and staining. High-quality custom cabinets take a different approach. Every surface, inside and out, is powder coated. This creates a sealed, durable finish that resists moisture, scratches, stains, and fading. It also makes cleaning effortless. What would normally soak into cheaper materials simply wipes away. Fully Enclosed Cabinets Make a Bigger Difference Than You Think This is one of the most overlooked details. Many standard cabinet systems skip a full back panel to reduce cost. While it may not seem noticeable at first, it impacts both durability and functionality over time. Fully enclosed cabinets with a solid back panel provide: Increased structural strength Better protection against dust and debris Reduced moisture exposure Less opportunity for pests to enter It is a small detail that dramatically improves long-term performance. Built to Fit Your Space, Not the Other Way Around Off-the-shelf cabinets are built in standard sizes. Your garage is not. That mismatch leads to wasted space, awkward gaps, and the need for filler pieces that reduce both function and appearance. Custom cabinets eliminate that problem entirely. Every system is designed and built to fit your exact layout, maximizing storage while creating a clean, seamless look. Whether you need space for tools, equipment, or everyday storage, the system is built around how you actually use your garage. A More Responsible Way to Build Quality is not just about durability. It is also about how materials are sourced and finished. High-end custom cabinet systems use sustainably sourced wood materials and powder coating processes that do not produce harmful emissions. That means no solvents, no VOCs, and no compromise between performance and environmental responsibility. Made in the USA Matters Where your cabinets are made plays a role in how they perform. Custom systems manufactured in the United States offer tighter quality control, better materials, and more consistent craftsmanship. It also ensures that what you are investing in meets a higher standard from start to finish. Is It Worth the Investment? If you are looking for the lowest upfront cost, custom garage cabinets are not the right choice. But if you are looking for a solution that will hold up, stay looking clean, and function the way it should for years, the difference becomes clear. This is not just about storage. It is about creating a space that works better every single day. Ready to Upgrade Your Garage the Right Way? If your goal is a garage that is clean, organized, and built to last, a custom solution is the next step. Design something that fits your space, your needs, and your standards. A fresh coat of paint seems simple. Pick a color, roll it on, done. But the difference between a paint job that looks great for years and one that starts failing in months usually comes down to a few avoidable mistakes. And most of them happen before the first coat even goes on. Skipping or Rushing Prep This is the number one reason paint jobs fail. Paint does not hide imperfections. It actually makes them more noticeable. Every dent, patch, rough edge, or uneven surface becomes more visible once fresh paint goes on. Proper prep means cleaning, sanding, filling holes, smoothing surfaces, and sometimes priming. It takes time, and it’s not the exciting part, which is why it gets skipped or rushed. When prep is done right, the final result looks smooth, even, and intentional. When it’s not, the finish can look wavy, patchy, or inconsistent no matter how expensive the paint is. Choosing the Cheapest Option Everyone wants a good deal, but painting is one of those areas where price usually reflects process. Lower-priced bids often mean less prep, fewer coats, or lower-quality materials. It might look fine at first, but within a year or two you may start to see peeling, fading, or uneven wear. A properly done paint job should last. Not just look good for a few months. Picking the Wrong Sheen Sheen affects both appearance and function, and it’s something a lot of homeowners overlook. A higher sheen like semi-gloss reflects more light. That makes it easier to clean, but it also highlights every imperfection in the wall. A flat or matte finish hides imperfections better but can be harder to clean in high-traffic areas. The right choice depends on the space. Living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and trim all require different considerations. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Relying on Tiny Paint Samples Looking at a small swatch or paint chip is one of the easiest ways to end up with the wrong color. Color changes dramatically depending on lighting, surrounding materials, and even the time of day. What looks like a soft neutral in the store can feel too dark, too yellow, or too cool once it’s on your wall. Testing larger samples on your actual walls is the only way to see how it will truly look in your space. Underestimating Time and Process Painting is often treated like a quick weekend project, but a quality finish takes time. Dry time between coats matters. Cure time matters. Rushing either can lead to issues with adhesion and durability. This is especially true for cabinets and detailed surfaces where the finish needs to hold up to daily use. The Bigger Picture Most paint problems are not caused by the paint itself. They come from shortcuts in the process. When everything is done right, the result feels clean, smooth, and intentional. It looks like it belongs in your home, not like it was rushed. If you’re investing in painting, the goal should not just be a new color. It should be a finish that holds up, looks consistent, and actually elevates your space.
